During the course of the semester, you will select a developing country of interest to you, and write a 1500-2000 word research report. The report will highlight one development challenge faced by the country, and will discuss how this challenge has, or has not been, addressed by relevant stakeholders (e.g. the state, development partners, international financial institutions etc). Your report should draw on World Bank and UN data, in addition to any other data you may have found that is relevant. You should also draw on the work of other researchers and scholars. Cite your sources in the body of your paper and provide a list of references at the end of the report. Use APA format for the citations. Some questions to guide you: What is the main development challenge that you want to focus on? What is the scope of this challenge for the country you are writing about? Why is this a challenge for development in this country? In answering this question, think about the definitions of development and the theories we have covered in this class. What efforts have been made to reduce/mitigate/cope with this challenge? By whom? Why? Evaluate these efforts: Successes? Failures? Reasons?
You will also want to include the following, depending on your topic: 1. Background information about the country and level of development (geographical location, World Bank classification; GDP or GNI per capita; HDI ranking; other useful/relevant indicators of development) 2. Additional relevant information (e.g. economic structure; trends in economic growth and human development indicators; other development indicators relevant to the development challenge that you want to focus on) Cite your sources within the text and provide a bibliography at the end
