INTRODUCTION

The effects of substance abuse in children

Substance abuse has affected many children in the Detroit Michighan area. The state offers specialized programs to assit children in need. They provide healthcare services including an evaluation of alcohol. Alcoholism is one of the most common substance abuse disorders in the world and it is responsible for many social, economic and health issues in society.

According to the World Health Organization estimates there are about 2 billion individuals around the globe who consume alcoholic beverages out of these an estimated 76.3 million suffer from a diagnosable alcohol abuse disorder. Alcoholism and related health complications cause an estimated 1.8 million deaths and a loss of 58.3 million of disability adjusted life years every single year (Lakshmamma & Kalavati, 2018, p. 37).  Approximately one child in every four, i.e. 28.6% of the children in the United States are affected by parental alcoholism (Lakshmamma & Kalavati, 2018, p. 37).
