In chapter 2, the authors discuss informal learning as having three types – self-directed learning, incidental learning and socialization or tacit learning. The authors provided examples of self-directed learning using the scenarios of Charlie and his model railroad hobby and Trudy and her quest to learn all she can to help her in her fight against breast cancer. This type of informal self-directed learning is common in our society, especially with widespread access to advanced technology.Adults are becoming experts on subjects due to necessity or through hobbies, including home improvement, health, cooking, and politics. The authors stated although such self-directed learning is commonplace, many adults and adult educators don’t recognize this type of learning as “real learning” since it takes place outside of a formal educational structure.
