Write an essay responding to one of the two questions:
1. Political Identities
Patrons and artists from 2500 BCE to the contemporary have used art and architecture to
articulate political identities. Using five examples discussed in the course, write an essay
examining how art and architecture has been utilized to create political identities in
South Asia. Your five examples must include: two artworks produced before 1200 CE;
two produced between 1200 CE and 1800 CE; and one produced after 1800 CE.
OR
2. Notions of Space
From Buddhist stupas to Islamic tombs, from Hindu temples to modern visual culture,
South Asian artists and architects have engaged with notions of space in complex ways.
Using five examples discussed in the course, write an essay examining how space has
been mobilized and/or represented in South Asian art and architecture. Your five
examples must include: two artworks produced before 1200 CE; two produced between
1200 CE and 1800 CE; and one produced after 1800 CE.
Specifics
? 5 pages, double-spaced (~2200 words); 1 in. margins; double-spaced. Please submit a MS
Word file (not pdf).
? Make an argument that responds to one of the prompts (Political Identities OR Notions of
Space)
? Use 5 examples of art and/or architecture discussed in the course to support your argument
! 2 artworks produced before 1200 CE
! 2 artworks produced between 1200 CE and 1800 CE
! 1 produced after 1800 CE
? Include images with captions of all examples at the end of your paper.
? For each example, identify the approximate date, the context (place of production, use), and
patron and/or artist (if known).
? Connect your examples clearly and specifically to your argument.
? Use 3-5 secondary sources, cited in Chicago Style Footnotes and listed in a bibliography
