PART II: CASE STUDY
Directions: Review “The Case of Chung Ming” on page 44 of the text. Develop a treatment plan for Chung Ming. Your final document should be at least 2-3 pages and adhere to APA standards, including in text citations. Please visit the Academic Resource Center for concise APA guidelines.Chung Ming is a teenager,14 years old,and heis ethnic Chinese. His parents immigratedfrom China when Ming was roughly 9 yearsold. Ming’s parents have not yet mastered theEnglish language and in some cases, he hashad to translate for his family. Lately, Minghas been skipping school and he has beenhanging out with a group of other Asian(mostly Chinese) youth that have establisheda small gang.Ming’s parents are humiliated by hisbehavior and do not act as if they are really readyto conduct counseling. They express that theyare very troubled by Ming’s behavior and eventhat he brings dishonor on his family. Ming, onthe other hand, is much more Westernized thanhis parents and he notes that many of his friendshave forsaken much of their Chinese viewsfor those more consistent with mainstreamAmerican society.Ming seems indifferent as you watch himwhile his parents talk, noting that Ming staysout late, drinks at age 14,and he has even stolen small items from various stores in the neigh-borhood.You can tell by observing that Ming’sfather has difficulty with English and is a bitwithdrawn. The mother is also withdrawn anddoes not offer anything to the conversationthroughout most of the session.Ming is on juvenile probation and heseems to meet the requirements of his supervi-sion. The mere fact that he is on probation isproblematic with his parents and is also asource of shame for all members of the family. After the session, you are fairly sure thatMing is still engaged in illegal activities with hisprior gang. You make it a point to ultimatelycontact his probation/parole officer during thenext week.Given the dynamics of this traditionallyChinese family, Ming’s advanced acculturationin Western culture, and the lack of concernthat Ming has, you realize that there are manymore factors at play than Ming’s simple misbe-havior.You consider the cultural dynamics andbegin to develop a plan
